The Pythoness, whose real name was Madeline, was the great-aunt of Corinne and the guardian of the sixth syllable of the Word.

The Pythoness lived in a hollow tree in the Sunken Lands. The tree was surrounded by puff-ball mushrooms, which contained spores that give amnesia if inhaled. Galloran brought his daughter, Corinne, to live with her so she wouldn't be in danger. Not much more is known about her.

One day, the Pythoness fell to the floor of the tree she and Corinne were living in, clutching her breast and gasping for air. She muttered some words to Corinne, but Corinne was unable to understand her. Corinne wrote a note to herself to remember that the Madeline died of ‘Natural Causes’.
